colony usually has thousands of ants. But only ONE of them lays eggs. It is called the ant queen, and it has wings! Also, it is very big.

In hot tropical climates all insects can grow very large. Tropical ants are the size of the normal ant's queen. And the tropical ants' queen looks like this - like a small butterfly, with a scary angry face and pincers. With ants this big, you can actually look it into the eyes. And their faces look angry.
