   Our nose works like an IR spectrometer - we can sense molecular vibrations! There are many clever experiments with fruit flies that can used to prove this theory.

   We can smell separately functional groups like SH, C=N, COOR, etc., and the whole molecular vibrations in the `fingerprint` region of the IR spectrum.
